Certified Nutritionist vs Nutritionist: What’s the difference?

There are key differences between a certified nutritionist and nutritionist. Anybody can call themselves a nutritionist; whereas, a Certified Nutritionist is also called a Clinical Nutritionist, or Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN). To achieve this distinction, you must have four-year degree in clinical nutrition or a master’s degree in human nutrition, have completed at least 15 courses of core nutrition science, complete at least 900 hours of internship, then sit for a national board exam.

Continuous education and maintaining certification depend on each CCN completing 40 hours of additional courses every two years, attending two CCN scientific symposiums annually, and re-certifying every five years. This ensures that each patient is receiving the most relevant, up-to-date, science-backed nutrition information from their online certified nutritionist.

Our team of Certified Nutritionists is qualified professionals. We develop individualized diet plans, tailoring nutrition interventions to fit each patient’s unique needs.

What does a nutritionist do?

As online certified clinical nutritionists, our approach centers on the patient. Nutrition education is a key piece of success, as we identify lifestyle and eating behaviors, nutrient deficiencies, and excesses in our patients’ diets. Empowering patients to feel more confident in their food choices comes with the patient taking an active role in their nutrition plan. Our goal is to help our patients live vital, healthy lives.

We can’t wait to get started.

Your personal registered dietitian and nutrition consultant will analyze your nutritional deficiencies and excesses, dietary patterns, medical history, and supplements. Together, we will develop an individualized, sustainable nutrition plan.

Here are some questions to ask when choosing a CCN:

  • Where did you study nutrition science?
  • Where did you do your internship?
  • What professional organizations do you belong to?
  • Why did you become a Certified Nutritionist?
  • How will you approach implementing nutrition changes within my current lifestyle?
  • What is your nutrition coaching style?

What to look for when choosing your Online Certified Clinical Nutritionist:

Choosing the right CCN to work with makes all the difference. Take the time to look into these three key areas, so you have the best nutrition coach to help you reach your goals!

  • Reputation: look for reviews and contact clients to see how their experience has been.
  • Coaching style: a CCN’s style should fit what you’re needing, as an individual, to be successful.
  • Counseling skills: changing the relationship with food and eating can be pretty emotional. Your Certified Clinical Nutritionist should be able to help you manage the psychology of these changes.

Testimonials

Angie

I had the pleasure of working with Cassie Steinberg, Registered Dietitian over a period of 6 months. We met weekly to come up with personal health habits and fun meal ideas. What began as me wanting to lose some weight really ended up becoming a process of self-love and creating daily eating habits I could live with long-term. Cassie was creative and kind. She helped me in so many ways to accept the body I have and to nourish it daily. I highly recommend her as a Dietitian and body image guru

Hope

Working with NY Nutrition Group was the best decision I ever made! Lisa Moskovitz is an expert in intuitive eating and eating disorders. She is truly the only person that has been able to help my eating disorder recovery. Lisa is very kind and knowledgeable! I highly recommend to anyone looking for support – Hope S.

Liz

Loving my appointments with NY Nutrition Group. They take a wholistic approach to your nutrition and health, instead of just telling you what food groups to put on your plate or to simply cut out entire foods. I better understand how food works in my body in coordination with activity, sleep, mental health and overall health and wellness. I’m so glad I found them. They are helping me heal and improve my relationship with food and my body

Zahra

I’ve had the pleasure of working with two outstanding nutritionists. My former nutritionist left during COVID. Since then, I’ve been working with Julia DiPietrantonio. Julia is culturally competent, which is very important to me … If you’re looking to gain confidence not just a sense of control over your relationship with food, Julia is a great partner. I really appreciate NYNG, and I hope they continue to see cultural competency as a key pillar of their platform – Zahra Marie

Maria

I have had the pleasure of working with Jeanne for a couple of months now and I’ve never felt better. Since I first started working with her she listened to all my goals and always gave me the best guidance and recommendations to meet my goals. I’ve noticed that I make wiser nutrition decisions since working with her and value the sessions we have

Angelica

Have been working with Lisa for 9 months and am very pleased with the experience. I’ve seen progress toward my goals, but more importantly, the way that Lisa frames progress is holistic, balanced, and not overly obsessed with the scale. I’m grateful to have someone to share my stressors and disappointments through the process who has the knowledge and perspective to help assuage them. I’ve never once felt like I was being pushed into unsustainable habits or behaviors that are isolating. A great person to add to your care team if you want to build a healthy, realistic relationship with food and your body!
