What are the signs and symptoms of a food allergy?

Food allergies are the body’s immune system reaction to a “harmless food.” The reaction is immediate and can be deadly. Allergy symptoms include rashes, swelling, breathing problems, and light-headedness. If you’re experiencing this, you should see a doctor immediately.

Specialized Nutrition Support for Food Allergies:

  • Label Reading & Ingredient Literacy: We teach you how to decode complex ingredient lists and identify hidden sources of allergens (such as “casein” for milk or “albumin” for egg) on both food and cosmetic packaging.

  • Nutritional Gap Analysis: When major food groups are removed, we can identify potential nutrient deficiencies—such as Calcium or Vitamin D in a dairy allergy—and introduce safe, nutrient-dense alternatives to bridge those gaps.

  • Safe Substitution Strategies: We provide practical advice on how to swap ingredients in recipes so you can still enjoy favorite meals while maintaining the proper texture and flavor of the original dish.

  • Cross-Contact Prevention: You will receive guidance on how to prevent accidental exposure in the kitchen, including tips on shared cookware, storage, and food preparation techniques.

  • Dining Out & Social Guidance: We help develop scripts and strategies for communicating with restaurant staff and managing social gatherings to reduce anxiety and ensure safety while away from home. (This is the same for managing food allergies in children, keeping them safe at birthday parties, school functions, and more.)

  • Emergency Preparedness: While not a replacement for a doctor’s medical advice, a dietitian on our team can help reinforce the importance of an Allergy Action Plan and ensure you understand the need to carry emergency medications, such as an epinephrine auto-injector.

  • Building a “Safe” Pantry: We help curate a list of trusted brands and products that align with your specific allergy profile, saving you time and stress during grocery trips.

Food Intolerance Symptoms

Food intolerances are the body’s inability to process or digest a certain food. Probably the most common food intolerance is lactose. As we age, our intestines make less of the enzyme lactase, which leads to a lactose buildup in the digestive tract. Other common intolerances include caffeine, gluten, and salicylates. Many can relate to feeling bloated, gassy, having diarrhea, and other symptoms related to food intolerances.

What is the difference between gluten intolerance and Celiac disease?

Celiac disease is not an allergy, intolerance, or sensitivity. It’s an autoimmune disorder. When gluten is consumed, the body’s digestive system experiences a complex inflammatory reaction that can make people quite sick. Eating gluten just one time will not cause this reaction; however, over time, those with Celiac disease can experience weight loss, malnutrition, and other more serious digestive problems. Though people might have gluten intolerance, only 1% of the population has celiac disease.

Do you feel like your food is making you sick?

People often come to us struggling with bloating, cramping, chronic fatigue, migraines, fibromyalgia, and ongoing discomfort. Many say they feel unwell most of the time. The link between autoimmune conditions, migraines, and other chronic health issues—and gut health, food sensitivities, allergies, or intolerances—is not always obvious.

Signs & Symptoms of Food Sensitivities:

  1. Bloating, gas, digestive discomfort
  2. Headaches, migraines, brain fog
  3. Weight gain and/or weight loss
  4. Bowel changes – constipation and/or diarrhea
  5. Nausea
  6. Fatigue
  7. Joint and muscle aches
  8. Skin issues

As opposed to allergic reactions, which are immediate, sensitivities can occur anywhere from 24 – 72 hours after ingesting particular foods. Sensitivities also depend on the quantity of the food consumed.

What is the root cause of food sensitivity?

The root causes of food sensitivity can be traced by to an unbalanced gut microbiome or intestinal barrier dysfunction (leaky gut), which allows undigested food particles to irritate your digestive tract.

Likewise, the underlying cause of food sensitivity might not even be the food itself. Your body might be fighting a bacterial infection or a “hidden” viral infection. It might have small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

As functional dietitians, we believe it’s important to understand the why of our patients’ symptoms. This is why we prefer to first administer the Gut Zoomer Test. It’s the most comprehensive digestive health test on the market and assesses bacteria, yeast, viruses, and parasites in the gut microbiome, alongside relevant digestive and inflammatory markers. It measures hundreds of species of microbes at once.

Undergoing food sensitivity testing is another alternative that can help identify the foods and chemicals that are making you feel bad.

What is the Pinnertest for Food Sensitivity?

The food sensitivity test (Pinnertest) is a finger-prick test that can help identify which foods and chemicals your body is reactive, moderately reactive, or non-reactive to. By working with one of our Registered Dietitians, we will develop a diet that will suit your unique and individual needs to reduce or eliminate foods that cause discomfort. Through guided nutrition therapy, you can feel empowered about your food choices again, eating your way to a healthier you, one bite at a time.

Why take the Pinnertest for food sensitivities or intolerances?

Functional medicine and nutrition counseling don’t just treat symptoms. WHY you’re experiencing these symptoms is fundamental to developing effective treatment programs. Are you experiencing any of these issues?

  • Weight Gain
  • Tiredness or Chronic Fatigue
  • Migraine and Aches
  • Bloating and Edema
  • Joint Pain
  • IBS – Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Skin Problems

What is the Gut Zoomer test? How does it work?

The Gut Zoomer sensitivity test is a stool test that can assess bacteria, yeast, viruses, and parasites in the gut microbiome, alongside relevant digestive and inflammatory markers. The panel measures hundreds of species of microbes at once. At this time, it is the most comprehensive digestive health test on the market.

Why take the Gut Zoomer test?

As function dietitian nutritionists, we always ask WHY. This test provides much-needed answers for our patients and gives us the information we need to tailor nutrition interventions to help improve your uncomfortable symptoms. Are you experiencing any of these issues?

• Autoimmune conditions  •  Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis) • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)  •  Celiac disease  • Cardiovascular disease • Metabolic Syndrome • Diabetes • Liver and gallbladder disease • Neurological disorders • Mood abnormalities • Skin rashes (eczema or dermatitis) • Inflammatory symptoms • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) • Fatigue • Gas and bloating • Indigestion • Infections • Intestinal permeability (‘leaky gut syndrome’) • Nutrient deficiencies • Food sensitivities • Malnutrition •

The foods, additives, and chemicals tested in the Pinnertest are as follows:

Testimonials

Angie

I had the pleasure of working with Cassie Steinberg, Registered Dietitian over a period of 6 months. We met weekly to come up with personal health habits and fun meal ideas. What began as me wanting to lose some weight really ended up becoming a process of self-love and creating daily eating habits I could live with long-term. Cassie was creative and kind. She helped me in so many ways to accept the body I have and to nourish it daily. I highly recommend her as a Dietitian and body image guru

Hope

Working with NY Nutrition Group was the best decision I ever made! Lisa Moskovitz is an expert in intuitive eating and eating disorders. She is truly the only person that has been able to help my eating disorder recovery. Lisa is very kind and knowledgeable! I highly recommend to anyone looking for support – Hope S.

Liz

Loving my appointments with NY Nutrition Group. They take a wholistic approach to your nutrition and health, instead of just telling you what food groups to put on your plate or to simply cut out entire foods. I better understand how food works in my body in coordination with activity, sleep, mental health and overall health and wellness. I’m so glad I found them. They are helping me heal and improve my relationship with food and my body

Zahra

I’ve had the pleasure of working with two outstanding nutritionists. My former nutritionist left during COVID. Since then, I’ve been working with Julia DiPietrantonio. Julia is culturally competent, which is very important to me … If you’re looking to gain confidence not just a sense of control over your relationship with food, Julia is a great partner. I really appreciate NYNG, and I hope they continue to see cultural competency as a key pillar of their platform – Zahra Marie

Maria

I have had the pleasure of working with Jeanne for a couple of months now and I’ve never felt better. Since I first started working with her she listened to all my goals and always gave me the best guidance and recommendations to meet my goals. I’ve noticed that I make wiser nutrition decisions since working with her and value the sessions we have

Angelica

Have been working with Lisa for 9 months and am very pleased with the experience. I’ve seen progress toward my goals, but more importantly, the way that Lisa frames progress is holistic, balanced, and not overly obsessed with the scale. I’m grateful to have someone to share my stressors and disappointments through the process who has the knowledge and perspective to help assuage them. I’ve never once felt like I was being pushed into unsustainable habits or behaviors that are isolating. A great person to add to your care team if you want to build a healthy, realistic relationship with food and your body!

FAQ About Nutrition Therapy for Food Sensitivies, Intolerances, and Allergies

Can food sensitivities cause anxiety?

Food sensitivities may increase anxiety for some people, but current research does not show that they directly cause it. That said, gut health plays an important role in mental well-being. When the gut microbiome is out of balance, it can lead to inflammation. This inflammation may affect the gut lining and the gut–brain connection. Studies have linked ongoing, low-grade inflammation with conditions like depression.

Supporting a healthy gut is often the first step toward better overall health. As functional registered dietitian nutritionists, our role is to look beyond symptoms and understand what is happening underneath. Anxiety can be one sign of an unhealthy gut, but finding the root cause is key to long-term improvement.

If you are experiencing symptoms like bloating, fatigue, discomfort, or anxiety, working with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who specializes in gut health can help. We use advanced testing, such as the Gut Zoomer, to identify harmful bacteria or viruses. We may also use food sensitivity testing, like the Pinnertest, to help identify specific trigger foods.

Using these results, we create a personalized nutrition plan that removes problem foods while still meeting all of your nutrient needs—so you can heal without restriction or fear around food.

Oftentimes our patients are surprised how much food sensitivities play a role in general health and well-being. Skin conditions like psoriasis, chronic diseases like Lupus and Crohn’s, and being unable to lose weight can all be exacerbated by an unhealthy gut and/or food sensitivities.

There are important steps toward gut health:

  1. Identify if you have a healthy gut microbiome. This can be done with the Gut Zoomer.
  2. Identify trigger foods and chemicals with food sensitivity testing, as needed.

Feel healthier and reach your wellness goals with a diet individualized to fit your unique needs. We look forward to working with you!
